Living Room Revamp

It had been more than a decade since this couple made any changes to their living room. With an upcoming baby shower, they were willing to make a significant investment in the transformation of their home to host out-of-towners. They engaged us for gudiance before constructing built-ins and then again after the construction phase for styling & staging.

It had been more than a decade since this couple made any changes to their living room. With an upcoming baby shower, they were willing to make a significant investment in the transformation of their home to host out-of-towners. They engaged us for gudiance before constructing built-ins and then again after the construction phase for styling & staging.

An unusual project request at first but eventually became a smashing success. The couple had been wanting to construct built-ins in their living room for years but could never design the proper layout. That’s where we came in. We helped by designing a schematic for the built in location, the built-ins themselves, and then designed a floor plan to compliment their new feature. With the big rocks out of the way, we returned to stage the 12+ new shelves before their big party!

Scope of Work:

Consultation: Collaborated with homeowner to understand what their goals were for the space. How did they envision using the space. What were their entertaining goals? What were the built-in requirements? They wanted to guidance on where teh built-ins should go, how they should be oriented, furniture layout options, plus staging services when it was all done.

Goals:

  • design a built-in strategy

  • style built-in shelving with new decor

  • needed 2 comfortable recliners (lots of testing!)

  • mix of traditional and modern style

  • new lighting strategy (20 ft. ceiling) to help darkness of room

  • floorspace for grandchildren to play with toys

Design: It was split into 2 stages. First, we presented a few strategies for the built-ins then landed on the best one. From there, we designed a floor plan and aesthetic that matched their preferences. It needed a modern twist with traditional style.

Installation: The client worked with contractors to construct the built-ins, paint colors, and lighting according to our mockup vision. Once completed, we provided sourced items including a sectional couch, coffee table, rug, recliners, accent pillows, fixtures, lamps, decor items, and curtains. The customer purchased and installed the major items before we returned to the residence to stage the decor items and get them party approved!

Challenges:

  1. High ceilings: Sometimes, high ceilings can make a space feel cold so we needed to lower the “perceived” feeling to make the space cozier

  2. Contractor work: Since the customer required built-ins, we needed to create contractor-friendly plans and communication.

  3. Little natural light: We had to get creative with overhead lighting, recessed lighting, accent lighting, and strategic lamp placement

Results:

  1. Compliments: They got tons of compliments on their new space and they look forward to serving their guests in a warm, inviting space for years to come.

  2. Comfort: We nailed the sourced recliners for the man of the house. No back pain for NFL Sundays

  3. Class: An elevated feel that combines traditional design, function, and highlights the best feature of the physical space.
